Winterizing Instructions for Above Ground pools
Some people insert a Gizmo into the skimmer and plug the return line. Others
lower water of pool below returns (where the water jets into the pool) and
skimmer. NEVER COMPLETELY DRAIN A POOL! This can cause your pool
to collapse. Either method is fine. It is mostly personal preference.

On an in-ground pool you can open your main drain and close the skimmer valve to pull water from the bottom of the pool while in the backwash position. Lower water level to just below your return jets, or you can lower the water 3"- 4" below the skimmer and use a heavy-duty shop vacuum to blow the water out of the lines.
